It’s not that we’re not used to seeing choreographed dancers. But I don’t think there was anybody who wasn’t surprised by the 2007 video of 1,500 Filipino prison inmates, with perfect precision, acting out the zombie scene from Michael Jackson’s 1982 classic, “Thriller.” A sea of orange uniforms with speakers blasting overhead, it looked almost too good to be true--yet without the overproduced, airbrushed nonsense that we tend to see on mass performances. In reality, the idea behind it was almost earnest: created by the prison’s chief as a fun way to keep inmates mentally and physically fit. As one prisoner, who played Michael Jackson in the YouTube hit, put it: “Dancing takes our minds away from our problems.” For the rest of us, what makes this video viral is that it’s different from the rest. It’s so easy to think you have to be shocking to make a hit on the Web, but what sets this video apart is that it’s simply fun to watch.
